Marijuana Policy Project

In the News

  • MPP Says Michigan and Massachusetts Initiatives Signal "Sea Change"
  • Michigan voters said yes to medical marijuana by a ratio of nearly 2-1. ... Michigan is the 13th state to allow medical use of marijuana. ... Massachusetts voters on Nov. 4 approved the first statewide measure to decriminalize marijuana ... Rob Kampia, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project ... said the efforts in Michigan and in Massachusetts demonstrate a "sea change" in public attitudes ... "Last year an American was arrested on marijuana charges once every 36 seconds, which is more arrests for marijuana possession alone than for all violent crimes combined." Kampia said in a press release. "Voters have loudly said, 'Enough!' ... "Marijuana prohibition is about to take its place next to alcohol Prohibition on the ash heap of history." (November 16, 2008)

  • Op-Ed Cites Michigan Medical Marijuana Initiative As Example of "Pure Democracy"
  • Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "We pray to be conventional. But the wary Heaven takes care you shall not be, if there is any good in you." Regarding Ballot Question 2 to decriminalize an ounce or less of marijuana, many a politician's prayers to be conventional were answered. Instead of "together we can" or "change you can believe in" ... [too many] politicians in massive unison took a platform of "together you won't" and "more of the same." And then something funny happened. In Berkshire County, Question 2 was overwhelmingly supported. (November 10, 2008)

  • MPP Quoted on Wisconsin Considering Medical Marijuana
  • People who support using marijuana for medical purposes in Wisconsin hope a Michigan proposition could have a ripple effect in the Badger state. ... Twelve other states and Michigan allow severely ill patients to use marijuana in their treatment. ... "The federal government has been hostile to these laws," said Bruce Mirken, communications director for the Marijuana Policy Project, a Washington, D.C.-based group that lobbied for the Michigan law. "But a quarter of the country now allows it." ... Groups including the Wisconsin Nurses Association and the Wisconsin Public Health Association support the legalization of medical marijuana. (November 8, 2008)

  • Hawaii County Makes Marijuana Lowest Law Enforcement Priority
  • Voters approved the [Hawaii County] measure [making marijuana the lowest law enforcement priority] 34,957 to 25,464 in Tuesday's election. It was one of several victories for advocates of less punitive marijuana penalties. ... Other cities that have previously passed "lowest priority" initiatives in recent years include Denver, Seattle and Eureka Springs, Ark., as well as the California cities of Santa Barbara, Santa Monica and Oakland. In San Francisco and West Hollywood, similar measures were passed by elected officials. (November 8, 2008)

  • MPP Quoted on Absurdity of New Drug Czar Ads
  • "Become a Burrito Taster!" screams its latest print ad [from ONDCP], designed to look like an old-school comic book pitch. ... The punchline comes at the bottom: "[T]here aren't many jobs out there for potheads." ... It's all a bit much for the folks at a Marijuana Policy Project ... "We couldn't make this stuff up," said Bruce Mirken, MPP's director of communications. ... On MPP's blog, Mirken continues: "By the way, jobs held by people who ve acknowledged smoking marijuana include governor of California (Arnold Schwarzenegger), astronomer (Carl Sagan), mayor of New York (Michael Bloomberg), billionaire rock star/songwriter (Paul McCartney), and well, you get the point." (November 7, 2008)

Thank You, John Walters! We’re actually going to miss John Walters when he finally leaves his post as drug czar. He and his minions keep making our points for us — and apparently don’t even know they’re doing it. Take, for example, this post from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy’s blog, reproduced here in full: In [...]

Who Says Drug Warriors Can t Be Funny? Folks, it’s official: Opposition to safe, legal access to medical marijuana for seriously ill patients has dwindled to the point where only the most obnoxious blowhards like Bill O’Reilly even bother stoking it. Here he is spouting off on the latest lie from the White House drug czar’s office that medical marijuana dispensaries outnumber Starbucks coffee [...]

More on ONDCP s Nonsense About San Francisco Dispensaries This little brouhaha is generating a lot of attention. Now Wired News weighs in with an amusing item. But it’s important to remember that this is serious stuff. While ONDCP continues to denounce medical marijuana as a “fraud,” here’s what the city of San Francisco’s health director, Dr. Mitchell Katz, had to say about federal raids [...]

Blog Wars Episode V: The Empire s Hacks Yesterday, the San Francisco Chronicle City Insider blog picked up my last post about ONDCP s spurious claims that San Francisco houses more medical marijuana facilities than Starbucks shops. A senior health inspector for the city told The Chronicle that ONDCP’s claim that nearly 100 medical marijuana facilities are operating downtown was extremely incorrect. The city [...]

Marijuana, Drugs, and Pregnancy Complications Could Other Factors Be the Culprit? Use of marijuana and other illicit drugs by women who are pregnant is a cause of great controversy and some political grandstanding. In a few cases, this has led to draconian actions, including felony prosecutions of women in Texas. Such actions are justified by studies that show that use of drugs such as marijuana or cocaine [...]

Lies, damned lies Just one day before Michigan voters overwhelmingly approved their state s medical marijuana ballot measure, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) falsely claimed that there are currently 98 medical marijuana dispensaries operating in downtown San Francisco. After drawing attention to the ONDCP s boldface lie here on our blog, I decided to check in [...]

Medical Marijuana Linked to Crime Oh, Really? A news story from a Bend, Oregon TV station bears the alarming headline, “Medical Marijuana’s Link to Crime.” As this is becoming a recurring subgenre of local news stories, it bears some comment. The gist of this and similar stories is that sometimes people who possess or grow medical marijuana get robbed. Well, sure. So do [...]

How can i get a decent grinder offline

Sat, 22 Nov 2008 03:25:19 GMT

i am in need of a grinder but cant order it online because it will come to my house and my dad will burst a blood vessel. is there any type of store that would sell either a proper grinder or something very similar that is advertised as a spice or coffee grinder? also the kief screen is not a pivotal feature for a grinder right now, it would be nice but im really just interested in getting my hands on something to grind.

Oh damn. I get home totaly baked and I find we have my parents friends over. well they were drinking so I grabbed a beer and started drinking too so they wouldn't question my droopy red eyes, just think I'm drink drunk. I then lead an hour long intellectual, in depth conversation about beer and other alcohols.

I rescued a human today

Sat, 22 Nov 2008 01:37:24 GMT

***I did not write this, but I felt it was post worthy.* :) "I rescued a human today!" Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel, I blocked her view. From a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them. As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and the side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one! "I rescued a human today!"

What kind of cellphone do you use?

Fri, 21 Nov 2008 22:48:14 GMT

Right now I've got a Blackberry Pearl. My contract with T-mobile expires this month, and I ordered my Blackberry Storm from Verizon today. I can't wait. I've had a lot of experience with the iPhone, and I can't say that I don't like it. It's an awesome phone. Tons of great features, and very easy to use. ATT service isn't always great though, and I've heard too many reports of dropped calls. I'll update as soon as I get the new phone and have some time to play around with it. So what do you guys use?

My First Time High Experiences...

Fri, 21 Nov 2008 21:00:36 GMT

Hey everybody! Some of you may have seen my other posts with questions and such, but right now, I'm going to post my experience of my first high.... So, it was yesterday morning. I had gotten 1 gram before in a small little dime back, and my friend had gotten 2-3 grams in this bag. So, my friends knock at 11, and I tell them to come in. We pile the weed, and then split it into four even corners, since there was 3 of us there, and we were waiting for our last friend. So, since we tried 3 different gas stations and none of them would sell us zig-zags because were not over 18, we ended up resorting to using some blank bible paper. So, we made roaches out of these little, new, baseball cards, I rolled four of them. One of semi-long and skinny, two where a little bit shorter but fat, and one was just all messed up. Since I rolled, I got the long skinny one, my other two friends go the short fat ones, and the friend who wasn't there yet was going to get the messed up wierd one. So, we really wanted to smoke it, but we had to wait for our other friend. 10 minutes later, he calls us up and says he can't come anymore :( So, we say screw it. We go onto my back porch (no one is home) and light up. I have to say, the first few hits were hard, and not very pleasent. Well, actually, the first one wasn't really that bad. But the 2-5th ones really hit me hard, I sort of gagged, coughed ALOT, and overall felt hot and dry, and also tasted like ash. One of my other friends, despite no previous smoking experience, was blowing the smoke out of his nose, etc, easily, with no coughing? And the last friend was coughing here and there, yada yada yada. Anyways, me and my friend who was also coughing were half-way through, and everyone collectivly decided we will put them out and see what happens. (Although the 'pro' person finished his whole thing.) We waited for about a minute in the snow and started to come back inside. But while I was going inside, I noticed that my legs were starting to become very tired. Almost wobbly. So I sat down, and then my eyes felt really really tired. Then slowly, I sort of just zoned out. It felt soooo wierd. It felt like a dream, or a movie. I could hear myself talking, but not in my head, through my actual ears. It felt almost as if I was watching a slideshow, like, my vision wasn't fluid. It was little snapshots. Then, eventually, I got into my 'full' high. Now apparantly, when I get high. Time moves REALLY REALLY slow, and I talk...I talk ALOT. The whole time, it would feel like 25 minutes, but it was only like 3 minutes. We had set up the movie Pineapple express on my computer but I couldn't pay attention. I kept on talking about random stuff, and every 3 minutes I would repeat myself. When I was talking, I noticed I was talking louder and in a higher pitch. It felt like, talking normally, was high pitched and loud, and I had to work to get it to normal 'normal'. Sorry if that makes no sense. The crappy thing was, neither of my friends got high. Well, the one who was coughing with me, got REALLY REALLY tired, he didn't talk much. And he ate our whole box of oreos, and then our bag of chips. But the other one, was just normal. The dude who was blowing out of his knows, holding in, and smoked his whole joint, was the only one completely fine. So, eventually, I get down off the high, I feel very tired for the rest of the day, and another friend comes over. So, the next morning. We still have two half joints, and a full joint, so we decide to smoke up with our new member of the group ;) but he has smoked before. This time, we all passed around the one half-smoked joint from yesterday, and then we were done. But I felt like I hadn't really had enough, so I lit up the other one and took one hit then put it out. The EXACT same thing happened. I was really the only one high, and I felt really high. I talked for pretty much two hours, and at one point, for no reason, I just kept saying 'woah' and then saying it backwards. So 'Woah haoW, Woah haoW....'. But, we started playing games this time, and time FLEW by. It felt like 2 minutes of talking, and it was like 10 minutes. So, two different experiences. But I was really the only one that actually got high, which kind of disappoints me. But it was AWESOME either way. On top of that, I still have one and a half joints for next weekend! Weed is awesome. Sorry for the life-novel. I just felt bored and wanted to talk about it. PS: I am apparantly labeled as the 'Easy-Bake Oven' now ;) Lol.

So, we really wanted to smoke it, but we had to wait for our other friend. 10 minutes later, he calls us up and says he can't come anymore :(

So, we say screw it. (Although the 'pro' person finished his whole thing.)

We waited for about a minute in the snow and started to come back inside.

Is my weed good quality?

Fri, 21 Nov 2008 20:44:44 GMT

Note: I won't describe the way it looks because I'll be providing a picture. The weed smells pretty good, it seems pretty crunchy too. I haven't tried smoking it yet. Also, if you can't tell from the picture, there are brown parts to it. Now the pictures: Sorry they're bad quality, it was on my cell phone. http://www.freewebs.com/xmangalaxy/DSC00324.JPG http://www.freewebs.com/xmangalaxy/DSC00326.JPG http://www.freewebs.com/xmangalaxy/DSC00327.JPG

An Athiest in the Woods..... (Guaranteed laugh!)

Fri, 21 Nov 2008 20:23:38 GMT

*_ATHEIST IN THE WOODS _* An atheist was walking through the woods. 'What majestic trees! 'What powerful rivers! 'What beautiful animals! He said to himself. As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him. Image: http://i33.tinypic.com/in4fex.jpg He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder & saw that the bear was closing in on him. He looked over his shoulder again, & the bear was even closer. He tripped & fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw & raising his right paw to strike him. Image: http://i34.tinypic.com/eqdoqg.jpg At that instant the Atheist cried out, 'Oh my God!' Time Stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. 'You deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don't exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident.' 'Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer? The atheist looked directly into the light, 'It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the BEAR a Christian'? 'Very Well,' said the voice. The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. And the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head & spoke: Image: http://i34.tinypic.com/33vnr04.jpg 'Lord bless this food, which I am about to receive from thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen.'

I have a water-bottle bong - I want something better

Fri, 21 Nov 2008 17:24:55 GMT

Its not a bong, but a piece I use for my vaporizer. Its just a water bottle with a hole for tubing. I want to make something better that I can make out of every day things, but it has to be more solid/sophisticated than water bottle. Also my bowl/tubing on vaporizer has a carb so I don't need one on my "water-filter" (rather than naming it bong).
